Shale Shaker

★Description★

Shale shaker is the first stage solid-liquid separation equipment in a solids control system on a drilling rig. It can separates out the solid particles above 74μm (with shaker screens 200 mesh) from the returned drilling fluids by mechanical vibration. The discharged solid phase is collected by the auger and conveyed to the mud pit or to the drilling waste management system for further treatment to obtain dryer solids and recover useful fluids, or for direct disposal.

★Working Principle★

The shale shaker vibration motors generate a certain G force to let the material on the shaker screens is thrown up, and at the meantime, move forward in a linear motion, balanced elliptical motion or a combination motion, to break the adhesive materials for solid liquid separation. Shale shaker is an important equipment in a drilling rig mud system and it determines the working efficiency of the successive solids control equipment and the cleanliness and property of the treated drilling fluids.

★Main Parts★

A shale shaker is mainly composed of five parts, base, feeder, screen basket, basket angling mechanism and vibrator. In which, the screen basket is the most important part to determine the separation efficiency. Design, material selection, welding craft, vibration motor selection, G force value setting, screen basket angle, shaker screens mesh are all key factors for ensuring a shale shaker’s stable performance and treatment result. And a bottom bypass valve allows the drilling fluids flows directly into the mud tank without being processed by the shaker screens, as an emergency plan for big capacity drilling fluids treatment or kick off situation.
